RHS lady soccer players lose 3-1 to physical Sheridan

Mar 18, 2012 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

The Riverton Lady Wolverines were on the road for their soccer season opener and played well early, according to coach Rick Bergstedt, but in the end couldn't hang with Sheridan's stronger and more physical style of play.

Sheridan took the non-conference match from Riverton 3-1 Friday evening at Homer Scott Field.

"We actually thought the first 10, 15 minutes of the game we played really well and took control of the game," Riverton head coach Rick Bergstedt said.

The Lady Broncs' Noelle Golinvaux scored the first of her two goals Friday in the 22nd minute, but the Lady Wolverines answered when Alexis Oaks found Marcia Ashdown in the 34th minute to pull Riverton even.

"By that time, they had taken control of the game. When they scored their goal, it lifted their play. They took hold of the game and were in control the rest of the way.

Play physical

"We asked our kids to respond to the physical play. We were not winning any 50-50 balls, and they responded better," Bergstedt said.

Although the score was tied 1-1 at halftime, the Lady Broncs strung together two second-half goals, one from Golinvaux in the 59th minute and another from Ricky Ryan in the 65th minute to secure the win.

"I think we expected them (Riverton) to look a little more like they looked at the start of the game. At least we got to see some of the things we need to work on. We struggled to get the ball out of our half and struggled to connect passes. We played hard, but it was not going to be our day. We got out-physicaled. It was a good game for us to play against a quality team," Bergstedt said.

Riverton travels to Worland Thursday for a 3 p.m. varsity match while Sheridan, with 50 athletes in the girls soccer program, played in the Cody Jamboree Saturday.
