CWC hosts team hoops camp this weekend

Jun 14, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Games are being played in four different gymnasiums.

Central Wyoming College is the host of its annual team camp this weekend in Riverton.

The two-day camp started Friday with games at different places around Riverton.

Games will be held at CWC, Riverton High School, Riverton Middle School and at Rendezvous Elementary.

Teams attending the boys and girls camp are Riverton, Lander, Wyoming Indian, Shoshoni, St. Stephen's, Wind River, Douglas, Worland, Lovell, Big Piney, Hanna Elk-Mountain, Thermopolis and Midwest, some with multiple teams.

"It's a fun thing to do," CWC women's basketball coach Serol Stauffenberg said.

"We moved it from July to June because it seems like so many basketball teams around the state are doing a lot of their camps in June. Our numbers were down a little bit last year. We made a better effort at finding more teams this year."

The camp has 33 teams this year in the field.

"We had to scramble to get all these games in," Stauffenberg said.

The camp is held in conjunction with the Wyoming High School Association officials camp.

"We have to make sure that we get enough officials to sign up," Stauffenberg said.

The games are 40 minutes with a running clock. The clock stops in the last two minutes when a foul is called.

"We report fouls so the officials can work on their things," Stauffenberg said.

This camp gives the coaches a good idea of what they have coming back for next season.

"They are probably looking at making some determinations with some kids as far as if they are a junior varsity or varsity player," Stauffenberg said. "Some people are establishing stuff for next year. It just kind of depends on the team."
