RHS track runs, throws at first meet in Casper

Mar 20, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Riverton High School senior Hannah Svilar opened the track and field season on Saturday by winning the discus title at the Glen Legler Memorial meet in Casper.

Svilar launched the winning throw of 119-2 to beat the other Class 4-A, 3-A and 2-A athletes in the field.

The mark by Svilar qualified for her for the state Class 4-A meet. The state qualifying mark is 115-10.

"I thought that Hannah did really well," RHS co-head coach Jorah Griffith said. "It's good to get the pressure off early in qualifying for the state meet."

Svilar placed third in the shotput (35-0.75). Torrington's Marty Jolovich won the shot put event (37-0.50).

The meet generated a good starting point for RHS to the track and field season. RHS took 50 athletes to Casper.

"We found out some of the areas that we are weak in and some of the areas that we are strong in," RHS co-head coach Tawn Gopp said. "We got to see a lot of Class 4-A schools a the meet."

Lander Valley High School and Dubois brought a small number of athletes to the meet.

In the girls standings, the Wolverines placed 10th, scoring 36 points. Casper Natrona won the team title (110 points), and Cheyenne Central finished second (74.50).

The RHS boys finished ninth (22.50) points. Casper Natrona ran away from the field (123), Cheyenne East was second (92) and Kelly Walsh (80).

RHS will now prepare for a track meet on Saturday in Cody. Gopp said Sheridan and the Wolverines will be the only 4-A schools in the meet. The other squads will be from 3-A and 2-A.

The RHS 4x800-meter relay squad of Sydnie Neville, Kassie Kister, Jessica Amsbaugh and Jillian C'Bearing finished second in a time of 11:02.17. Neville, Kister and Amsbaugh are all freshmen, while C'Bearing is a sophomore.

Casper Natrona won the race in 10:35.89.

Sheridan Smith, Jensyn Pettit, Kister and Ashtlyn Leisy were second (4:31.59) in the 4x400-meter relay for the Wolverines.

"We are really excited on how the two relay squads did for us," Griffith said.

Cheyenne South captured first in a time of 4:27.13.

Smith added a sixth place finish in the triple jump (31-11).

Tyler Graham scored a fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (42.96) for the RHS boys, and he was ninth in the 110-meter hurdles (17.24).

"Tyler needs to work on his form more in the 110-meter hurdles, but he came back to have a great race in the 300-meter hurdles," Gopp said.

Graham placed fourth in the long jump (20-3), and Seth Withers was fifth (20-0.50).

Brandon Fullerton ran to sixth in the 400 meters. The RHS freshman posted a time of 56.59.

"Brandon had a promising start for us," Gopp said. "There is a good chance he will be on the 4x400-meter relay team."

Sneior Kole Stewart was seventh in the 100 meters (11.88).
