Jun 23, 2013 - StaffOne of the best high school athletes ever to run the tracks and hardwood floors of Fremont County was honored in the early days of summer 1987 with Wyoming's top award for high school competitors.
Riverton High School's Jenelle Brown was that year's recipient of the Simpson Award, honoring the state's outstanding student athlete.
She won nine Class 4-A state track and field championships and graduated with four state records. Hurdling was her specialty, but she also excelled in the long sprints.
Brown also was an all-state volleyball player and all-conference basketball player for the Wolverines during an outstanding era of girls sports for Riverton. Her classmate, Marcy Befus, was the winner of the Mower Award as the top Big Horn Basin region athlete a few weeks earlier, and she was nominated for the Simpson Award as well.
