No decision yet on triple-killing suspects facing death penalties

Jun 26, 2013 - The Associated Press

POWELL -- The Park County attorney hasn't decided yet whether to pursue the death penalty against two teens accused of killing three people in Clark in March.

Stephen Hammer and Tanner Vanpelt, both 19 years old, have pleaded not guilty to killing 40-year-old Ildiko Freitas and her parents. Investigators say the motive was stealing Freitas's Audi A4.

Park County Attorney Bryan Skoric told county commissioners last week that he expects to make a decision on the death penalty in the next 60 days.

Commissioners haven't set money aside to pay for the trials yet because of uncertainty about whether the men will actually be tried and about how much it would cost if the trials proceed.

Court documents allege Hammer played a lesser role in the shootings.
