Friends of the Library says book adoption sales are down

Jun 26, 2013 - By Andrea Novotny, Staff Writer

The Riverton Branch Library continues to host book adoptions 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the first Wednesday of every month in the upstairs section of the library.

The book adoption is a fundraiser to support programs at the Riverton Branch Library, 1330 W. Park Ave.

Book adoption donations have been down recently, generating no more than $200 each month, according to Friends of the Library, a non-profit group comprised of community volunteers not directly associated with the library.

Proceeds have gone to support summer reading programs, provide food for library functions, supply furniture, update the teen gaming area, and bring in authors to speak.

Last year, the program brought in author Alison Espach, whose first novel, "The Adults," was a 2011 Wall Street Journal Top 10 Novel, a New York Time's Editor's Choice, and a "Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers" pick for spring 2011.

All items in the book adoption are given a suggested value and distributed for donations of the patron's choice. Available items include books, CDs, DVDs, games, puzzles, VHS tapes, audio books, cassettes and other media. Some author-signed books are available.

All items come from community donations, which can be dropped off at the front desk during all library hours. Any donations that cannot be used on the shelves of the Riverton Branch Library or any of its satellite libraries will be made available in the book adoption.

The Friends of the Library meets at 10 a.m. the last Wednesday of every month except November and December. Meetings are open to all.

Set-up for the book adoption is open to volunteers and will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. every Wednesday except the day of the book adoption.

The library also hosts Saturday book adoptions but will not have any in June or July.

There will be no book adoptions on Wednesdays when the library is not open.
