Unbeaten Giants top seed in Babe Ruth tourney

Jun 27, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

The Giants of the Riverton Babe Ruth League finished the regular season unbeaten with a 12-0 mark.

The team is the No. 1 seed for the postseason tournament. The league is made up of 13-15-year-olds.

The Giants played Thursday night vs. the Yankees in one of the semifinals.

"We were fortunate to have some great pitching on the team," Giants manager Mike Axthelm said. "We just need to make sure that we play our game in the tournament."

The Phillies and the Rockies played in the final game of the night.

"The league has been really competitive this year," Axthelm said. "It was a tight race to see who got into the tournament."

The two winners play Monday night in the championship game.

Axthelm said the Giants played one of their best games of the regular season Monday night in a 12-0 over the Lander Expos.

"We have put in a lot of runs across the plate this season," Axthelm said. "We have had fantastic production from everybody. They put the ball in play. We have just been a real solid team at the plate."

The top pitchers for the Giants have been Steven Reinig, Reed Axthelm and Baylor Beers.

"They have been really consistent," manager Axthelm said. "They have had really great control and getting some outs."

Lander teams

Two Lander Babe Ruth teams finished their baseball season Monday night.

The Lander Expos and the Lander Tigers played in the Riverton league.

"One of our goals is for the kids to improve from the start of the season," Lander Expos manager Chuck Carr said. "They did that. We were competitive for the most part."

The Expos finished the Babe Ruth season with a 4-8 mark.

"There were probably three games that we lost by one or two runs," Carr said. "We were competitive.

We could have ended the season at .500 or a little above."

The Lander Tigers ended the season at 1-11.

"They had a little bit of a tougher season," Carr said. "They had some injuries and kids that were gone to camp."

This was the third year Lander teams have played in the Riverton league.

"It's just not a lot of fun if two teams play over and over," Carr said.

"We like going over to Riverton. The Riverton kids like coming over to Lander. I think that it's really cool."

The Expos had a mixed age group. Ray Malek was the manager of the Lander Tigers.

"We were a pretty young team," Carr said.
