Sternberg, new UW president, says he'll take 'anti-ivory tower' approach

Jul 7, 2013 - The Associated Press

LARAMIE -- The new president at the University of Wyoming may have gone to Yale University as an undergraduate and later taught there as a professor, but says UW is "an anti-ivory tower university."

Robert Sternberg started his new job last week, replacing Tom Buchanan, who retired after more than a decade in the position at the state's only university.

The school's 24th president, Sternberg says one of his top priorities is for Wyoming's flagship university to have a deep connection to state residents and other institutions of learning.

"I see us as kind of an anti-ivory tower university," Sternberg said.

Day one began with a short walk from his new home on Ivinson Street to his office. He then worked on UW's budget and had a meeting about engineering programs.

He also discussed his desire to enhance the relationship between the Laramie-Albany County community and the university.

One idea, potentially, is a community engagement day at UW, he said.

But perhaps most important in the early going is relationship-building, Sternberg said.

"People need to get to know me, and I need to get to know them," he said.

Sternberg also wants to focus on ethical leadership, student retention and graduation rates.

Sternberg said he'll seek to boost faculty and staff pay to attract more talent to the campus.
