University of Wyoming golfer Eddie Stewart won the 91st Wyoming Amateur Championship Sunday afternoon by two strokes at the Riverton Country Club.

Stewart played three consistent rounds to rise to the top of the leaderboard.

Stewart carded rounds of 71, 70 and 71 for his winning total of 212.

"Eddie was real steady," Riverton Country Club golf pro Steve Johnson said.

"He made a couple of really long birdie putts in the final round."

Laramie's John Murdock IV finished second at 214.

Murdock opened with a 69 and followed with a pair of 73s.

Kyle Siddoway of Green River finished third (69-73-73--215).

Riverton's Zach Waxler entered the final round with a two-stroke lead on the field, but ended up fourth after firing scores of 67, 72 and 77 for a 216.

"Zach had to take a few chances when Eddie got the lead to try and make a move,"Johnson said.

Riverton golfers P.J. Thomas (70-74-75--219) and Easton Paxton tied for eighth (70-74-75--219).

Aaron Nirider placed 16th (70-77-76--223) in the standings.

"The greens were a little bit faster on Sunday," Johnson said. "Just the fact that it was the final round raises the difficulty level just because each shot feels a little bit more important. That played a factor in the scoring. The conditions of the golf course could not have been better."

Final round

Waxler couldn't make any birdies in the final round to protect his lead, but Stewart came to life Sunday with an eagle on the the par-5 third hole, which measures 516 yards. Stewart had a bogey on No. 9, but came up with birdies on No. 11, No. 12 and No. 15 to secure the championship. Murdock had birdies on the final nine holes on No. 12, No. 13 and No. 17 for his runner-up position.
