Lander runner-up at state girls U14 softball

Aug 5, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Improvement was shown in all areas of the game by a group of Lander softball players in the Under-14 division.

The Lander girls placed second at the recent state fastpitch tournament in Cheyenne.

Lander cruised past the Cheyenne Mayhem 15-0 in the semifinals.

In the title game, Torrington outgunned Lander 22-14.

"We played our best softball of the year against Cheyenne and for the first five innings against Torrington," Lander manager Melinda Cox said.

On the Lander roster were Lauren Fontaine, Becky Cecrle, Morning Gambler, Mia Maynard, Jade Ware, Sady Cunningham, Adrienne Matthews, Ronny Webster, Chelsea Badhawk, Macy Jacobson, Avery Cox, Raylee Nipper, Taylor Yeager, Amber Foutz and Allyson Sollars.

"We improved immensely and received several compliments from umpires regarding our noticeable improvement from our first tournament in Riverton to the state tournament," Cox said.

The Lander team played several tournaments before the state tournament wrapped up the regular season.

The first one was in Riverton back in June.

"The team improved the all-around game," Cox said. "We moved kids around to several positions and finally found a good rotation where each player could excel. We had a couple of girls on the team who had never played competitive softball, and their improvement was incredible."

The manager felt the biggest stride for Lander came on the offensive end.

"Our hitting came a long way at state, and we were able to get a lot of girls on base and move them around," Cox said. "The experience at state was wonderful. Cheyenne did a great job of hosting the tournament."

Cox wants to make a push for softball to grow in Lander.

"We will continue to enhance our competitive softball team in Lander," Cox said. "We hope to reach out and get younger girls interested so Lander has a team in every age division."
