Raiders land one on all-district team

Aug 5, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

A Riverton Raider is a unanimous selection to the American Legion South district baseball team.

Baylor Beers was one of four unanimous picks for the postseason team. He was the only Riverton Raider to make the team.

Evanston players Kade Lym and Ian Fisher, along with Laramie's Drew Burman were the other unanimous players from the district.

Lym and Willie Zajic were the co-players of the year from the South.

Lym was the pitcher of the year.

Jonathan McNees from Rawlins earned the manager of the year.

In the later stages of the season, Beers became the starting catcher for the Raiders. Beers also played first base.

Beers finished the season with a .469 batting average.

"Baylor was pretty consistent all year," Riverton manager Brady Beers said. "He had a couple of times where he got pretty hot. He never really got too cold."

Baylor Beers was the No. 3 hitter in the lineup.

Ryan Axthelm and Devin Matsen were the two other top Riverton players. Both were in the pitching rotation.

"Ryan had a great season for the time that he was with us," Beers Cutline -- Baylor Beers from the Riverton Raiders was named to the South district baseball team last week. Photo by Wayne Nicholls said. "Devin came into his own as a pitcher."

Nate Hatfield made some big strides during the season.

The season came to an end for the Raiders last week in a 13-12 loss to the Rawlins Generals for the No. 4 seed from the district tournament.

Rawlins built an early 9-0 lead before the Raiders forced things down to the wire.

In an 8-5 victory over the Generals in the first game of the district tournament, Steven Reinig went seven strong innings on the hill.

"His pitching last week at the district tournament was pretty incredible," Beers said.

The Raiders finished the year with a 11-34 mark.

Delbert Wichelhaus was the only Riverton player to be aged out.

"We just need to work on keeping this team together," Beers said. "We need to add key pieces to the team."
