Youth soccer to begin year next month
Aug 22, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor
Riverton Youth Soccer Association president Jeff Carruth is counting on strong numbers for the 2013 season.
The league is taking registration for the fall season.
Players can sign up at the R Recreation Office.
The season is for 5- to 14-year-olds.
The registration fee is $35.
"We are kind of a year-round sport," Carruth said.
"We are always excited to get the recreational season back up and to get the kids back on the field."
The biggest age group is for 5- and 6-year-old players.
"We will run about 80 kids (ages 5-6) through the fall program for the league," Carruth said. "We figured out that from last year, we ran somewhere between 350 and 400 kids through the program."
Carruth has a fun time watching the young players learn the game.
"It's something to see," Carruth said. "Soccer is a phenomenal sport for young people. All those thing that they learn from soccer can carry on."
The traveling season doesn't get into high gear until the spring.
The Riverton league wants to field Under-10, U12, U14 and U18 teams for the spring season.
Riverton has been very competitive in those divisions in the past seasons.
"We want the little guys to improve the most on fundamentals," Carruth said.
"It's going to progress with soccer latter on. It will also carry on into other sports."
Games begin for the fall season on Sept. 3 at Rein Park.
The league continues through October.
"We are looking forward to another good season," Carruth said.
The league the idea of middle school soccer being established in Riverton.
"That is something that we have gotten pretty excited about," Carruth said.
"We sure would like to see that program get going. Hopefully, we will bring up some younger kids and teach them some basics."
