Tigers third at season opening golf tourney

Aug 25, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Members of the Lander Valley High School gofl team held their own Thursday and Friday against the other Class 4-A teams at the Riverton Invitational tournament.

The Tigers were third in the team standings, scoring a two-day total of 649. LVHS plays in the Class 3-A level.

The season opening tournament was played at the Riverton Country Club.

"I was fairly pleased," LVHS coach Terry Berg said. "We were just trying to see where we were sitting. There weren't too many 3-A teams at the tournament. We knew that would be the best competition for us. I wanted to see how we stacked up."

Riverton won the tournament (623) and Kelly Walsh finished second (628).

Evanston ended fourth (690) and Green River was fifth (699).

"Four of our five kids all got right at 80 or below at least once," Berg said. "We now have to put two days together. That is where our goal for the varsity team is."

LVHS placed fifth in the girls standings with a score of 689.

"Riverton is a long course for girls," Berg said. "Now, we will just try to improve a little bit each week."

Casper Natrona won the team title (517).

Pinedale's Jordan Costello hit a hole-in-one on the par-3 No. 14 hole during the tournament.

Costello finished third individually with a two-day score of 147.

Costello is the defending Class 3-A individual champion.

Two LVHS boys tied for ninth in the individual field.

Kaufman checked in with scores of 78 and 89 for his medal.
