Wind River boys win Greybull track meet; girls finish second

Mar 28, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Wind River sophomore Josee Vogel began the 2012 track and field season by winning three individual events Saturday at the Bill Gerrad Memorial meet in Greybull.

Vogel finished first in the 100-meter hurdles (17.00), the 200-meter run (27.96) and the 300-meter hurdles (53.00).

"Josee did an excellent job for us," Wind River coach Dirk Gosnell said. "She had great times in the 100-meter hurdles, and in the 200 meters."

In the team standings, the Wind River boys won the five-team title, and the girls finished second.

"I was pleased with what happened on Saturday," Gosnell said. "The five-team meet was great for us. Our team is made up of 75 percent freshmen and sophomores."

The WRHS boys rolled up 147 points. Burlington placed second (118), followed by Greybull (110), Rocky Mountain (102) and Riverside (48).

The Wind River girls finished with 99 points. Burlington won the title with 140.

"The key is that you want to get them experience and not just put them in the Natrona meet right at the start," Gosnell said. "We had some kids that placed in the Greybull meet that probably won't place in a bigger meet for us."

The Cougars have 26 girls out for track and 22 boys.

"We are pleased about our numbers this year," Gosnell said. "We will continue to develop them, but we are going to be back in the thick of things."

WRHS will compete this Saturday at the Roy Peck Invitational at Wolverine Track.

Top performances

Wind River sophomore Tyler Rupe claimed two individual events in Greybull and finished second in another.

Rupe tied Burlington's Ben Mancuso for the top spot in the 100 meters in 11.35.

Rupe's performance automatically qualified him for the Class 2-A state meet.

Rupe added a first in the 400 meters (53.05) and second in the 200 meters (23.90).

"Tyler had some great times for early in the season," Gosnell said.

Shepp Campbell qualified for the state meet in the high jump by clearing the bar at 5-10 to place second in Greybull.

Burlington's Ben Mancuso won the high jump with a mark of 6-8.

Wind River's Joe Lupher was second in the discus (126-10) and in the shot put (40-8.25). Russel Naef won the 800 meters (2:31.02).

Dalton Perkins recorded a first in the 3,200 meters (13:38) and second in the 800 meters (2:31.36).

Kasi Hessling finished third for the WRHS girls in the 1,600 meters (7:38.20). She was third in the 400 meters (1:13.96).

Jordan O'Neal came in second in the high jump (4-10) and Abbey Maxheimer won the 3,200 meters (19:16.53).
