Sep 3, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorThe Riverton Wolverines and Lander Tigers finished 1-2 in the boys team standings Friday at the Worland Invitational golf tournament.
The Wolverines had a team score of 623 to win their second straight tournament of the fall season.
RHS came out and took the lead on the first day, then held off the competition in the 36-hole tournament.
"I was really pleased with how we played in the first day," RHS coach Lars Flanagan said. "On the second day, I was a little disappointed with our play. I thought that we would play better because we knew the course better. We had a good round going, but we didn't finish the round. The last three holes some of our kids took some big numbers. Our score could have been much better."
LVHS finished second at 629. Gillette placed third in 660, and Sheridan finished fourth (664).
"We have to learn how to play other courses," LVHS coach Terry Berg said. "I think that we will be fine at the end of the year. We had great conditions for the tournament."
The LVHS girls were third in the standings after a score of 660. Gillette took the crown (569), and Buffalo ended second (621).
RHS freshman Easton Paxton won the individual title with a two-day total of 140. Paxton put up a 68 on the first day and a 72 for his finish in the top spot.
Paxton's teammate Lars Becker placed sixth with scores of 78 and 77 for a 155.
"We can win tournaments when Easton isn't even playing at his best. He was probably disappointed with his second day's round," Flanagan said. "Lars really helped us push us to the win."
Lander's Trey Massey was fourth (73-78-151), and Casey Winger finished fifth (77-76-153).
The Tigers host the Lander Invitational Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. RHS will head to a match-play tournament on the same days in Green River. RHS will compete against the other Class 4-A West teams in the tournament. Riverton, Green River, Rock Springs and Evanston are in the field.
"We are going to rank our players with seeds for the tournament," Flanagan said. "We are taking 13 kids."
