Rest in torment
Sep 4, 2013 - By Steven R. Peck
Ariel Castro, the Cleveland kidnapper, is dead, apparently by his own hand
Ariel Castro is the man in Cleveland, Ohio, who kidnapped three young women and held them captive in his house for more than a decade.
Their names: Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight.
Usually they were chained to the wall, the furniture, or to each other.
Often they were gagged.
Always they lived in terror of when Castro would return to beat them again. Or rape them again. Or both.
Two of them became pregnant by him. He beat one so savagely that she miscarried her pregnancy -- twice.
Another of the three eventually bore a child, whose introduction to life on Earth was the captive hell of Castro's basement.
Finally, Castro got careless in the monitoring of his prisoners, and one of them escaped, notified a neighbor, who alerted police, and the god-awful ordeal was over.
Justice was swift for Ariel Castro. Only a few months passed before he was tried, convicted and sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison.
But on Tuesday, he opted out.
Prison authorities found him dead in his prison cell in Ohio, apparently a suicide by hanging. The chosen instrument for his self-imposed dispatch was his own prison uniform.
Rest in torment, Mr. Castro.
You will not be missed.
