Cougar girls off to perfect VB start at Saratoga Invitational

Sep 4, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

The Wind River Lady Cougars steamrolled through volleyball opponents Friday and Saturday for an undefeated record at the Saratoga Invitational.

The Lady Cougars swept Guernsey 25-14, 25-9, then outlasted Lusk 21-25, 26-24, 25-19.

WRHS also swept Little Snake River 25-21, 25-22.

The Lady Cougars won a three-setter over Saratoga 23-25, 25-14, 25-22. Wind River made quick work against Hanna Elk-Mountain 25-16, 25-12, and Farson-Eden 25-19, 25-19.

The tournament was the first one for new head coach Kristan Trujillo.

"It was fun to start our season off with wins," Trujillo said.

Trujillo said Wind River's Megan Giles played good volleyball in the tournament.

"She led the team with blocks as well as kills," Trujillo said. "This is her first year playing at the varsity level. She has really stepped up and has shown us what she is capable of."

The 6-0 start was a team effort from everyone on the roster.

"The girls were really proud of themselves," Trujillo said. "It was fun to see them be confident and having fun."

The WRHS coach said Kalli Keene, Tory Thoman, Macayla Arrington, Aspen Stagner and Darcy Maddock all played well for the Lady Cougars in the two-day tournament.

"I was impressed to see how well they served," Trujillo said.

Bailey Wilson sprained her ankle in the first game of the tournament.

"We are trying to get her better by Saturday," Trujillo said.

Conference ahead

"This week, we will be practicing our blocking as well as running a faster offense," Trujillo said.

WRHS will host conference opponents Kemmerer and Big Piney on Saturday afternoon in Pavillion.

"It's very important to get off to a good start," Trujillo said.

Kemmerer is 5-1 after the first weekend and Big Piney sits 3-3.
