RHS girls set to host big Riverton Invitational

Sep 5, 2013 By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

Riverton's Jordan Settlemire qualified for the Wyoming high school state swim meet in five events during Riverton's first weekend meets of the season last weekend in Gillette.

During the pentathlon style meet Saturday, where swimmers compete in five events, the Wolverine junior placed fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.97), seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.39), 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:19.15), third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.47) and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (26.96).

Overall, Settlemire placed sixth in the meet.

Last year, Settlemire placed fifth at the state swim meet in the 100-yard freestyle and ninth in the 200-yard individual medley.

Although no other varsity swimmers placed in the top 25, Michaela Kechter, Kierra

Muehler, Riley Thomas, Kassi Kister, Elena Holguin, Stephanie Joy, Rachel Murray and Dakota Nelson competed for the Lady Wolverines.

"We have more depth earlier than we had in the past. We're running 21 on the team (varsity and junior varsity), which is five more than in the past," RHS head coach Chad Fallin said.

The Lady Wolverines have three seniors in Holguin, Joy and Murray.

"I was pleased with both the varsity and junior varsity in Gillette. The girls stepped up to swim all of the events," Fallin said.

Fallin believes Kechter will qualify for the state meet for a second year in the 100-yard breaststroke and also could make it in the 50-yard freestyle. Fallin said Joy and Kister, who qualified last year in the 50-yard freestyle, also have potential to make it to the state meet.

Riverton placed eighth out of 10 teams at a relay meet Friday, also in Gillette.

Riverton will host two meets this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 and 7.

Friday, the Lady Wolverines will compete against Gillette, Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East, Laramie, Sheridan and Cheyenne South according to the activity website in the pre-invite meet which begins at 4 p.m.

RHS then hosts its annual Riverton Invitational, with Gillette, Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East, Green River, Lander, Laramie, Natrona County, Rock Springs, Sheridan, Evanston and Cheyenne South scheduled to compete. The meet begins at 9 a.m.

Both meets are at the Riverton Aquatic Center. There is no admission charge.

Assisting Fallin with coaching duties are David Toppenberg, Sarah Hughes and Erica Yarber.
