Tigers make semis in big Montana VB tourney

Sep 10, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Another productive weekend was put in by the Lander Valley High School Tigers on the volleyball court Friday and Saturday at the annual Montana-Wyoming Border War tournament in Powell.

The Tigers lost to the Billings, Mont., Central team 25-19, 25-19, in the semifinals of the two-day tournament.

Billings Central swept Jackson 25-21, 25-11, for the title.

The Border War is a tournament where teams from Montana and Wyoming go head-to-head on the volleyball court.

"We improved from a week ago," LVHS coach Janet Ragan said. "We played well enough to compete in one of the two semifinal games."

Offensively, Codi Swenson, Drew DeKing, Keesha Rowan, Alicia Espinosa and Mak Meeks hit for more kills in the second tournament of the season.

"We're all hitting better shots," Ragan said.

LVHS has four players primarily responsible for passing, Cierra Winslow, Espinosa, DeKing and Swenson.

"They all stepped up this week by passing more consistently," Ragan said.

Baylie Bullington continues to improve as she gets experience on the court.

"Her attitude and effort make us better every time we play," Ragan said. "We will continue to spend a lot of time in practice serving and on defense."

The Tigers opened their Class 3-A West conference schedule playing Tuesday night at Cody.

LVHS will be in the Rawlins Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

LVHS hosts Pinedale on Tuesday, Sept. 16, for its first home match of the season at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.
