RHS cross country times improving as season rolls on

Sep 12, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Times are dropping all over the lineup for the Riverton Wolverines cross country teams after the first two meets of the season.

Olivia Thompson clocked 21:45 to place third in the girls varsity division last Friday at the Rawlins Invitational.

Thompson is a junior for the Wolverines.

Teammate Tina Lopez was second in the junior varsity in 23:55.

The course was 3.1 miles long (10 kilometers).

"Olivia looked really strong," RHS coach Jay Dayton said. "She is running well. She is doing a fabulous job. I couldn't be happier with the way she is performing right now."

There were 21 runners in the varsity girls race.

"We took anywhere from a minute to two minutes off the times," Dayton said. "We were really pleased with that."

Laramie won the boys and girls team titles in Rawlins.

"The Laramie varsity is contending for a state title for the boys and girls," Dayton said. "We had a really good field."

Ben Zoller was 15th for the RHS boys in 19:51 and Brytan Spoonhunter finished 25th (20:39).

RHS ran in the Green River Invitational in the first meet of the season.

"A lot of time when the kids get through that first race they understand how they can perform a little bit better for the next race," Dayton said. "They get another week of conditioning. All that adds up."

RHS is planning to compete Friday afternoon at the Wyoming Indian Invitational in Ethete.

The varsity runners go at 4 p.m.

"We like these smaller meets because it gives us time to develop without putting any pressure on the team," Dayton said. "It gives us a little more time to get into race shape instead of jumping into the big 4-A meets."

LVHS in Rawlins

Two Lander Valley High School cross country runners finished in the top at the Rawlins Invitational.

Micah Whiting led the way for the Tigers, coming home seventh in a time of 18:35. Teammate Tristan Herr finished 10th in 19:14. Drew Gramlich was 11th in 19:17.

In the team standings, LVHS placed third with 66 points. Green River finished second (65).
