Feb 6, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets Sports EditorGavin Wilson isn't under the wrestling radar anymore.
The Riverton High School sophomore led the way for the home squad with a second-place finish in the 113-pound weight class on Saturday evening at the Ron Thon Memorial wrestling tournament in Riverton.
"Just being in the finals as a sophomore is special," Wilson said. "I think that I probably should have won the match, but there were probably a couple of mistakes that I had. It was a good experience to get to the title match."
Lander's Brodie Schneider won Fremont County's only championship, taking the belt at 220 pounds (see related story).
Wilson and Gillette's Evan Smith went toe-to-toe in the first period as the RHS wrestler scored two early points on a takedown.
After a scoreless second period, Smith scored two more points on a reversal to tie it 2-2. Smith pinned Wilson later in the period for the Ron Thon belt.
Wilson was seeded No. 7 for the tournament, and Smith had the No. 8 seed.
"This is a tough tournament to seed," RHS coach Jay Galey said.
Wilson advanced to the finals with a 13-3 victory over Lander's Ty Alexander.
"Gavin had a really good weekend," Galey said. "I know that Gavin feels pretty bad, but he will respond. He just set the pace to finish the season really good."
In the quarterfinals, Wilson edged Worland's Justin Newton 2-1.
"Those two matches were the big ones," Wilson said. "My main focus with Ty was to score a lot of points. I knew Ty was going to be a tough one to pin."
Ahren Wempen (126 pounds) TJ Galey (170) and Dawson Steeds (heavyweight) all placed fifth for the Wolverines.
Galey lost a close overtime decision to Powell's Olie Olson on Friday night, but battled his way back to beat Olson in overtime on Saturday afternoon for fifth.
Riverton's Jacob Flesher finished sixth in the 195- pound weight class.
"You always look back and think that we should have won there, but that just is the nature," Galey said. "The nice thing is that we came out of this healthy."
Gillette won its second straight Ron Thon Memorial team title with 217.5 points.
Cheyenne East finished second at 194 points. Douglas was third with 159.5 points. Sheridan ended fourth at 152.5 points, and Casper Natrona was fifth at 143 points.
Gillette recently lost a rare dual to Rapid City Central High School from South Dakota.
"The kids came out with a little bit more fire this weekend," Gillette coach John Seaman said. "When you put 3-A, 2-A into this thing, Cheyenne East is close.
Sheridan and Natrona are making a move. I wouldn't say there is a clear favorite in 4-A."
Riverton finished eighth in the team standings with 104 points.
Lander Valley High School was 10th at 92 points.
A shocker for the wrestling fans came at 182 pounds when Class 2-A Lovell's Dino Collins beat Burke Burgess from Class 4-A Gillette 5-2.
Cody Vichi of Rock Springs won his third straight Thon title at 120 pounds.
