Big Horn sent the Shoshoni Wranglers home early in single-elimination bracket play on Saturday in a 18-25, 25-21, 25-21, victory at the Big Horn Invitational volleyball tournament.

Burns outlasted the Wind River Cougars 19-25, 25-15, 25-22, from the tournament.

Wright beat Lovell 25-17, 25-15, for the top position in the bracket.

SHS is 5-3 on the year, while WRHS is 7-2.

"The Big Horn tournament always has some great competition," SHS coach Christina Mills. "They do a nice job of bringing in quality teams."

Shoshoni and Wind River will compete in the Thermopolis Invitational on Saturday. The Thermopolis tournament will be loaded with Class 2-A teams.

"Tournaments give me a good look at our conditioning and skills we need to work on for the future," Mills said.

"We had a tremendous weekend. We were able to work on our defense," Mills said. "We got better and better as the tournament went on."

In the close setback to Big Horn, Erika Eckley led the way with 13 kills. Raine Pingetzer collected 11 kills, and Shayde LeClair had eight.

Tasha Maddock came up with 23 digs. Annika Dechert put in 17 digs and Taylor Robinett recorded 14.

"We played really well against Big Horn," Mills said. "They are a quality team in Class 2-A this year and have many of their returning players from last year as state runner-ups. I was excited to take a game and play them tough."

In early matches at the Big Horn tournament, Shoshoni swept Hot Springs County 25-23, 25-20.

SHS split with Sundance 25-26, 25-22. The Wranglers beat Burns 25-20, 26-24. SHS swept Rocky Mountain 25-23, 25-23.

2-A field

Wright, Southeast and Lovell have some of top records in the Class 2-A division after the first three weeks of the regular season.

Wright is off to a 14-3 start. Southeast is 9-2. Lovell stands at 13-5.

Wright plays in the Class 2-A Northeast division. Southeast is grouped in the Southeast division. Lovell plays in the Northwest league.

"There are several standouts early on, but there is a lot of the season left to determine who is truly on top," Mills said.
