Sep 22, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorJackson erupted for 22 points in the third quarter to hold off the Lander Valley High School Tigers 38-27 on Friday night in the annual Homecoming football game in Lander.
LVHS took a 21-16 lead into halftime before Jackson seized control of the game.
LVHS dropped to 0-3 on the season. Jackson is 2-1.
The game was the final non-conference battle of the season of Lander.
"Our kids are continuing to work very hard," LVHS coach Doug Hughes said. "I believe that we are getting better each week. We are starting to see these results in the passing game. We still need to be able to run the ball if we expect to compete against strong teams."
LVHS hosts Torrington this Friday night to begin the Class 3-A East conference.
"With conference play beginning everyone gets to wipe the slate clear and start over," Hughes said. "We need to take advantage of this and improve to put ourselves in a good position in the conference."
Torrington is 2-1 on the season.
"Torrington is going to be another challenge for our team," Hughes said. "They run a lot of one-back sets. They rely on their quarterback to carry the ball and get it to their receivers on quick routes."
After going scoreless in the first two games of the regular season, the Tigers took it right at Jackson from the opening kickoff.
LVHS mixed the pass with the run to move the ball downfield against Jackson's defense.
The drive was capped off when LVHS quarterback Pete Spriggs hit Kobey Simpson for a 8-yard touchdown pass for the first score of the season.
"We were able to sustain a few drives in the first half, and we also capitalized on in few of Jackson's mistakes," Hughes said.
LVHS placekicker Keaton Scott made his first field goal of the year from 20 yards to make it a 9-8 lead for the Tigers after Jackson scored on a quick touchdown.
Jackson's Theo Dawson answered on a 19-yard touchdown run for a 16-9 lead with 39 seconds left in the half.
The advantage didn't last long for Jackson.
Spriggs hit Jaxon Hedges for a 56-yard touchdown pass. cutting the score to 16-15.
Lander's Jack Mazurie recovered a Jackson fumble to give the ball back to the home squad.
Spriggs connected to Hedges on a 19-yard strike with one second left in the half for a 21-16 lead.
It was all Jackson in the third quarter.
Jackson ran the ball right at LVHS in the opening drive to get quickly back in the game.
"In the second half, Jackson started to wear us down," Hughes said.
"They took control of the front lines."
