Lander boys edged by one stroke at regional golf

Jackson edged the Lander Valley High School boys golf team by one stroke Saturday for the Class 3-A West conference title in Powell.

Jackson put up a score of 649. LVHS was second at 650. Star Valley came in third (676), and Cody finished fourth (690).

The Powell course is par 72.

"We struggled a little in Powell, mostly with our putting," LVHS coach Terry Berg said. "The greens were fast for the tournament."

In the girls standings, LVHS came in second at 650. Star Valley ran away from the field scoring a 566. Jackson was third in 675.

Top placers

Two LVHS boys and one girl placed in the top 10 at the conference meet.

Golfers in the top 10 earned all-conference honors.

"They all had a good day in Powell," Berg said. "We just need to be more consistent."

Lander's Casey Winger finished fifth in the boys individual standings.

Winger played to a 74 on the first day. He finished with an 82 on the final 18 holes for a two-day total of 156.

Pinedale's Jordan Costello had rounds of 68 and 70 for a 138 to finish with at 6 under par for the tournament.

Lander's Trey Massey and JJ Gill of Jackson tied for eighth.

Massey opened with a 77 and followed with an 84 for a 161.

Gill had scores of 80 and an 81 for a 161 total.

Lander's Natalie Hafer and Jessica Lusty of Star Valley tied for fifth in the girls individual standings.

Hafer played to a 102 and a 92 for a 194. Lusty had rounds of 98 and 86 for her 194.

State in Buffalo

The Class 3-A state tournament is Friday and Saturday in Buffalo.

"All of our players have played the Buffalo course at least once," Berg said.

Wheatland won the 3-A East crown with a team score of 714.

Torrington was second with a 724.
