Sep 28, 2013 - By Alejandra Silva, Staff WriterRiverton Mayor Ron Warpness proclaimed Sept. 23 as family day in Riverton -- a day for parents to eat dinner with their children.
The mayor borrowed the idea from this year's ninth annual Wyoming First Lady's Family Night, which was celebrated on the same day.
The abuses of drugs and alcohol, the mayor said, has threatened the well-being of children, but according to a study from Columbia University, children who sit with their family to eat dinner are less likely to use drugs, smoke, drink alcohol or abuse medications.
"You learn a lot of things around the dinner table," Warpness said, adding that by not doing so frequently, parents are "missing out on their youth."
