Sep 28, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff WriterRAWLINS --A clamp-down defense, an explosive offense, and improved special teams powered the Riverton Wolverines to a Class 3-A East conference-opening win over the Rawlins Outlaws (1-3,0-1 Class 3-A West) Friday night. The final score was 49-6.
The win ups Riverton's overall record (2-2, 1-0 Class 4-A West) back to .500. Next Friday, Oct.5, Riverton will travel to Buffalo to take on the Bison, who were destroyed by Douglas 52-0 at home in their conference opener.
"It was a good win (against Rawlins). I felt like we played good in all aspects," RHS head coach Pat Patterson said after his first road victory.
As much as big offensive plays were the story at Rawlins, Riverton's defense played its best game of the year and held the Outlaws to just 25 yards rushing and 107 yards passing, and most of the those passing yards were late in the game when both teams were playing reserves.
But big plays are special and the Wolverines scored twice --almost three times --on plays of 50-yards or more.
Logan Hartbank pulled in a perfect pass from Brandon Fullerton and outran the Outlaw's defense for 78-yards and Riverton's second touchdown of the game. Sophomore Steven Reinig took the opening kickoff of the second half and dashed 83-yards to make the score 35-0.
And Tristan White's 54-yard run set up Dietrik Becker's second quarter 32-yard field goal.
Offensively for the Wolverines, White had his second 100-yard rushing game of the season, gaining 119 yards on just 13 carries and Hartbank caught two passes for 123 yards. Fullerton threw for 221 yards and had one interception.
Austin Patterson hauled in two touchdown passes, and White and Dylan Lewis also scored for Riverton.
Will Herbst, Caleb Richmond and White all were credited with five or more assisted tackles. Liam Vincent and Fullerton each were credited with three unassisted tackles. Devin Matsen had two sacks for the Wolverines at Outlaw Stadium and Reinig, Keeton Zancanella, Bo Patterson and Riley Otto recovered fumbles.
"We're going to work on the same things we have been working on. I think one of the things we saw tonight is that we missed tackles, and that is one thing we need to emphasize this week. We need to tackle better in the open field," Patterson said.
