Dubois win streak ends at 14 with 56-46 loss to MeeteetseSep 28, 2013 By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer
DUBOIS --The state's longest high school football win streak came to an end on a wet, blustery day in Dubois when the home-standing Rams fell 56-46 to conference foe Meeteetse in 6-man action.
Dubois had won 14 consecutive games before Friday's loss.
The Longhorns and Rams entered the game with perfect 3-0 records, but the play of senior Seth Bennett was too much for Dubois, especially the Rams' secondary, and the second-ranked Longhorns beat the defending state champions in a very entertaining game.
Bennett opened the scoring on a 10-yard run, capping an opening drive that saw the senior hit three different receivers and run the ball effectively.
Dubois had a one-man show of its own in senior Sterling Baker. Baker answered Meeteetse's opening score quickly with a 55-yard scoring run.
Baker evaded or broke tackles by all six Longhorn defenders on the play. Baker added another score on a 16-yard run to give Dubois a 12-8 lead after one quarter.
In the second period, Baker broke away on a 57-yard run but was tackled at the goal line. Nathan Moore converted the score on the ensuing play, with Austin Tharp taking a conversion pass from Baker for a 19-6 lead. Bennett scored again on a 5-yard run and Dubois once again had the answer, this time on a wild 17-yard pass play that started with Kurt Leseberg taking the snap, handing off to Baker, who then lateraled the ball back to Leseberg before passing to Rowan Hawk. Each time Dubois built a lead, Meeteetse came back to close the gap. Bennett found Carter Johnson on back to back scoring plays on the final two drives of the half, with Johnson scoring on a 20-yard pass and then almost scoring on a 31-yard strike.
In a strange play Johnson fumbled just before the goal line and a wild scramble ensued in the end zone, with Shawn Shepperson recovering the ball for a touchdown with just five seconds left in the half to give the Longhorns a tenuous 28-26 advantage.
Dubois regained the lead in the third on the first play from scrimmage when Baker broke a 60-run. Hawk's kick was the only conversion kick of the game for the Rams, but their 34-28 lead didn't hold for long. Bennett scored on a 7-yard run, then passed to Jasper Smith for another third-period score, and Meeteetse built a 42-34 lead with five minutes remaining in the third.
A 3-yard Moore scoring run cut the margin to two but Smith gave the Longhorns a double-digit lead at 50-40 with 6:03 left in the game on a 46-yard breakaway straight up the middle of the field.
Meeteetse, and Bennett in particular, punished the Dubois secondary all afternoon, completing a high percentage of passing and throwing over Ram defenders into the end zone on three different plays.
Dubois's final gasp came on Baker's 9-yard run.
The Dubois defense held on the ensuing series, forcing Meeteetse to punt. Baker found Walker Carrico on a 31-yard pass to the Meeteetse 28 with a minute left to play, and the Rams were poised to score and snag the victory, but Bennett came up with perhaps the best play of the game.
As Baker dropped to pass, Bennett shadowed him one-on-one.
Baker threw the ball, and Bennett deflected it high into the air. Bennett then intercepted the ball off his own deflected and raced 52 yards for the score on the interception return with just three seconds left in the game.
Dubois travels to Ten Sleep Friday, while Meeteetse hosts Wyoming Indian.
