Sep 28, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Sports WriterIt was a long trip and an even longer afternoon for the Wind River Cougars in faraway Yoder on Friday. Wind River completed a grueling opening schedule of football with a 57-6 loss to defending state champion Southeast Goshen.
The Cougars opened with the top-ranked Lovell Bulldogs from Class 2-A and played the second and third ranked teams in 1-A in Cokeville and Southeast. Add in a junior varsity squad from the state's second-largest high school in Casper Natrona, and you have a schedule that seems to send a message.
On Friday Wind River played solid defense to open the game, holding the Cyclones to just one score in the first eight minutes of play, but a Jeff Burroughs 51-yard scamper late in the first opened the scoring gates, and the home team proceeded to light up its side of the scoreboard.
Wind River found the end zone after trailing 26-0 in the second quarter on a lightning-fast 90-yard kickoff return by Kristopher Justice.
Adding to the misery was a cold, drizzling rain that made the Goshen County playing surface very soggy and slick.
The spark was brief and the Cyclones rolled for the remainder of the game, with the 45-point mercy rule in effect in the final period and Southeast reserves finishing the contest.
Wind River's defense had a solid effort in the second half as well, but Southeast tallied two "pick six" plays on interceptions of Cougar quarterback Robert Buline for half of their third and fourth period scores.
Wind River mustered a negative 10 yards rushing in spike of another workmanlike effort from Dylan Lookingbill, who finished with 19 yards on
14 grueling carries.
