Paxton leads state golf after 18 holes; team second in 4-A

Oct 1, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Round one was played in high winds on the Rock Springs Course.

Riverton's Easton Paxton built a five-stroke advantage in the race for the individual crown on Monday at the first day of Class 4-A state high school golf tournament in Rock Springs.

The Wolverines were second in the team standings by one stroke with 18 holes left to play.

Casper Kelly Walsh had a team score of 366. RHS was second at 337.

"The conditions were really tough on Monday," RHS coach Lars Flanagan said. "It was really windy.

The wind affected them more on their putting."

Laramie was third (345), and Cheyenne East sits fourth (347).

As the final round opened Tuesday morning, Flanagan said the conditions were almost perfect.

"There are going to be some teams that can go low," Flanagan said.

"We need to have our players have solid rounds. Kelly Walsh and Cheyenne East are two solid teams. It's going to be a dogfight."

Individual scores

Paxton opened the state tournament scoring a 73 on the par-72 White Mountain Golf Course.

Paxton's teammate Jayd Dion is fourth, checking in at 81. Alec Richardson had a 91 and Chris Quayle scored a 92 to round out the scores for the Wolverines.
