Shoshoni girls sweep 2 opponents

Feb 6, 2012 - By Randy Tucker Staff Writer

The Shoshoni High School girls remain tied for the top seed in the Class 2-A Southwest after a weekend sweep of Big Piney and Kemmerer at home.

Shoshoni shut down Big Piney 47-24 on Friday night, then rolled over Kemmerer 65-36 Saturday afternoon.

Against the Punchers, the Wrangler defense was stifling Friday night. Shoshoni allowed just single-digit team scoring in the opening three period.

Shoshoni led by eight after one, 16 at the half, and built the margin to 23 points entering the final period. Defensively, senior guard Tennell Parrish hampered the Big Piney front ourt throughout the opening three periods, forcing turnovers that led to transition baskets. The quick pace of Shoshoni's transition played to the talents of fleet-footed freshman Olivia Thompson, who tallied 11 points, nine in the second half.

Wrangler senior Hailey Pince paced scoring with 16. In the final period Martin played his entire bench, and Big Piney was able to play evenly with the younger Wranglers.

SHS 65, Kemmerer 36

Saturday's game was all but over in the opening minutes as Shoshoni put together perhaps its most balanced offensive attack of the season, with six players scoring between seven and 15 points and four in double-figures.

Shoshoni defense was impressive again, limiting the Rangers to just four points in both the first and second periods.

Wrangler guard Natalee Goff had a career of her career with 15 points and a surprising 3-pointer in the third period.

Goff led the Wranglers with 15. Pince scored a dozen, and the dynamic freshman duo of Olivia Thompson and Kiyana Martin each tossed in 10. Shoshoni entertains Dubois on Friday, then hosts Thermopolis in an interesting pre-regional contest.
