No points for Rustlers in Sheridan rodeo arena
Oct 3, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor
Tough weather conditions at the Sheridan College rodeo made it difficult for the Central Wyoming College Rustlers in the arena.
Rodeo officials had to cancel Friday's performance. Saturday, the cowboys and cowgirls competed all day.
CWC didn't score any points in the men's and women's team standings.
"We had a pretty rough weekend," CWC rodeo coach Drew Schrock said. "I'm not disappointed in anybody, but the weather was terrible. It was really muddy."
The Rustler Roundup rodeo in Riverton also had muddy conditions.
"The Sheridan arena can't handle moisture at all," Schrock said. "The more horses and stock were out there, the more sticky it got. It was pretty tough going."
Four in finals
In the team roping competition, CWC's pair of Alex Bone and Austin Anderson made it to the finals on Sunday.
In the first performance, the tandem had a time of 8.7 but didn't record a time in the finals.
Bull rider Wyatt Joseph was 10th in the first round. Joseph had a score of 58. He was bucked off in the finals.
"It was exciting to see him score points," Schrock said. "He needed it for sure. It helped his confidence out a bunch."
CWC's Jonnie Crossland was sixth in barrel racing.
"She had a good weekend," Schrock said.
Schrock and members of the rodeo program were on the road to the Lamar rodeo on Thursday morning.
The three-day rodeo starts Friday night, with the finals held on Sunday.
"They just have to go in there and believe that they can be champions," Schrock said.
CWC ends the fall season at the Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne on Oct. 11-13.
"At this time of the year, I work on horsemanship a lot," Schrock said. "I want to keep them within a game plan. I just want to keep that good attitude. It's just so much mental when you get to that level."
