CWC hosts Casper in big Region IX volleyball match

Oct 3, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

The Central Wyoming College Rustlers are aiming to move up the ladder in the Region IX volleyball standings vs. Casper College.

The important match starts at 7 p.m. Thursday at Rustler Gym.

CWC sits at 1-3 in conference play and 10-13 overall.

"We need to win every home match and just take advantage of being on our home court," CWC head coach Tiffany Stauffenberg said. "In the years past, we have played Casper College very well on our home floor. I hope that continues."

CWC lost to Laramie County Community College and beat Eastern Wyoming College for its first league victory of the season.

Both those matches were at Rustler Gym as well.

Western Wyoming swept Casper College last week in an early battle of the top teams in the standings.

"It's always nice going into a match after a win," Stauffenberg said. "I do think that is a little advantage. I don't think they expected a sweep from the Mustangs."

Oguz top hitter

After 23 matches, CWC's Asya Oguz is No. 1 on the team in kills with 176.

Middle hitter Kiara Skinner stands second after pounding down 143.

Teammate Marrisa Cutts is third at 135. Maddie Kelley and Tavia Young both have 121 kills.

"We have to play well on both sides of the ball," Stauffenberg said. "We don't have enough power for our offense to carry us."

In the blocking department, Sam Unruh had 78 blocks, and Skinner has 71.

"We definitely have to block to take some pressure off of our back row," Stauffenberg said. "All of our wins were because we played well both offensively and defensively."

Western sits first

After Casper College, CWC plays at the Western Wyoming Community College Mustangs in a Saturday afternoon match.

The Mustangs are up to 19-4 overall.

Western Wyoming is ranked No. 6 in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll.

Western is the only team ranked from the region.

"Western has been in control of our side of the region," Stauffenberg said. "Other than that, it's been whoever shows up ready to play."
