CWC takes buckles in steer wrestling, barrels at Lamar

Oct 8, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Progress was made by the Central Wyoming College women's and men's rodeo teams on Sunday at the Lamar event in Colorado.

CWC cowboy Coltin Hill won the steer wrestling title, and Kaylee Burnett finished first in barrel racing.

The CWC women's team finished third in the team standings at 145 points.

In the men's team standings, University of Wyoming and CWC were tied at eighth with 115 points.

"We had a much better showing this weekend," CWC coach Drew Schrock said. "The conditions were great. The ground was dry. Friday was a little chilly, but Saturday and Sunday were beautiful."

CWC didn't score any points at the Sheridan College rodeo on Sept. 27-29.

The Rustlers head to the Laramie County Community Friday through Sunday to end the fall season.

"We are just working on the basics and trying to get the horses working right," Schrock said.

Champions

Hill won his second straight steer wrestling title on Sunday in Lamar.

Hill won with a two-ride time of 8.7 seconds on his way to the championship.

In the regional standings, Hill is deadlocked with Riley Krassin from Casper College for the top spot.

The two have scored 280 points apiece.

"Coltin has had good practices all fall," Schrock said. "He drew a pretty good steer and made it work.

Krassin graduated from Lander High School.

Burnett won the barrel racing title at Lamar in 35.77 seconds.

"The ground has been pretty bad in the last couple of rodeos," Schrock said. "Her horse has been running well. She is riding the same horse than she finished five points from making the college national finals. That gave her a lot of confidence."
