CASPER -- A 33-year-old former Marine has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a man outside a strip club near Casper.

John Henry Knospler Jr. made his initial appearance in Natrona County Circuit Court on Monday. If convicted, he could face from 20 years to life in prison.

Police say 24-year-old James Baldwin was shot to death early last Friday morning.

Witnesses told police that Baldwin was shot next to a car, which then drove away.

Police arrested Knospler shortly after.

The defendant's attorney noted that Knospler was a U.S. Marine veteran who served tours in Iraq and was honorably discharged. He maintained Knospler acted in self-defense.

Natrona County Circuit Judge Michael Patchen set bond at $500,000 cash or surety.
