Big turnout at Tonkin Stadium for PP&K

Oct 10, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

A record number of Riverton athletes participated in the annual Punt, Pass and Kick competition held Wednesday afternoon at Tonkin Stadium.

There were 64 boys and girls ranging from 6 to 15 years old testing their skills in the competition.

In 2012, the event drew 41 participants.

"We were extremely pleased with the turnout that we had," R Recreation director Mary Axthelm said. "We were not expecting that many because it had been rescheduled. We have been doing this for so many years that the kids are expecting it."

Axthelm said the players get one opportunity for a punt, pass and kick.

"That punt and the kick make the kids a little bit nervous," Axthelm said.

The winners in each age division advance to the state competition.

The biggest division was the 8-9 boys group, with 22 fighting for the top spot.

"The boys 10-11 wasn't far behind," Axthelm said.

There were 19 in the that age group.

State in Riverton

The state competition is Sunday, Oct. 20, at Wolverine Field in Riverton. Start time is 1 p.m.

This is the fourth year Riverton has hosted the state event.

"It's a great opportunity for our community to gain from the people who travel here," Axthelm said.

Last year, the state competition had 78 in the field.

"I'm always amazed at how far people will come," Axthelm said.
