Wranglers upset losers to Riverside
Oct 13, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer
It wasn't what Shoshoni expected of the Riverside Rebels Friday at home.
Riverside had a single win on the season entering Friday's game, but the Rebels were up for the challenge and beat a lackluster Shoshoni effort 12-6 to make the Class 1-A West conference a very interesting mix with just two regular season games remaining.
"We can finish anywhere from second to not qualifying for the playoffs, depending on the next two weeks," Shoshoni head coach Tony Truempler said.
Shoshoni senior Jayden Haslam is the Wranglers' leading ground gainer, but a tackle from behind sent him hard to the turf on his shoulder and sent him to the sidelines late in the opening period.
He had a neck brace put on by a volunteer but removed it himself and was able to play in limited action in the second half.
Defensively, the Wranglers tallied their only score when freshman J.J. Pingetzer broke up a screen pass from Riverside's Royce Mercer and raced 67 yards for a late first-period score.
The Wranglers led 6-0 at the half and held that lead until late in the third, when Riverside found the end zone on a 45-yard Mercer pass to Ethan Sherburne.
"Our offense was not there at all," Truempler said. "Riverside was ready, and we were not. They had something to prove and really took it to us."
Riverside scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 5-yard run by Cole Hill that capped a short drive.
Shoshoni had the chance to tie the game or take the lead and moved the ball inside Riverside territory as time came to a close, but Anthony Eibert intercepted Tyler Clemetson at the 35-yard line. The Rebels were able to run out the clock for the win.
Shoshoni hosts Rocky Mountain this Friday at 6 p.m. in the season's final home game, then makes the long trek to Cokeville the following week.
Riverside entertains winless Wind River on Friday before going to Burlington in their regular-season finale.
