Wind River on short end of high-scoring game in Basin

Oct 19, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

It was a gunfight for a while Friday night in Basin as Wind River and Riverside combined for nine touchdown passes. The Cougars played well early, but Riverside came out on top of the high-scoring affair 52-26. The win leaves Riverside's destiny in its own hands with a final regular-season win over rival Burlington sending Riverside to Southeast Goshen in the opening round of the playoffs.

One more game

Wind River has a single game remaining at second-place Rocky Mountain in Cowley next Friday night.

Wind River found the end zone early in the first after an interception, with quarterback Robert Buline hitting his first touchdown on a 45-yard strike to Jordan Martin.

Buline combined with Clayton Reinick a few minutes later on a 28-yard scoring pass and run.

Riverside quarterback Royce Mercer was up to the challenge as well, hitting Ethan Sherburne on a 23-yard pass, then finding Tucker McKim from the same distance to knot the game at 12 after one period.

Riverside took the lead on a 33-yard pass and catch from Mercer to Sherburne, but the Cougars answered on an 8-yard pass from Buline to Kristopher Justice.

32 straight for Riverside

The Cougars stunned the Rebels early, but Riverside recovered to score 32 straight after that.

"Give them credit," Riverside head coach Sam Buck said. "They came out ready to play and hit us in the mouth."

Riverside took the lead for good on an 80-yard kickoff return by McKim and added a 20-yard pass from Mercer to Ryan Vigil to lead 34-20 at intermission.

A third pass from Mercer to Sherburne and a safety when the ball sailed out of the back of the end zone on a Cougar punt attempt put the Rebels up 44-20 after three.

McKim broke the aerial assault with the game's only rushing touchdown early in the fourth on a 50-yard run, and the Cougars final score came on an 28-yard pass from Buline to Reinick.
