Meeteetse rolls up 85 points in 6-man victory over St. Stephen's

Oct 19, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

The visiting scoreboard resembled a runaway pinball machine Friday afternoon at St. Stephen's. The unbeaten and top-ranked Meeteetse Longhorns rolled in and poured on 55 points in the first period. Three of the eight touchdowns scored in the opening 10 minutes of play were by the Longhorn defense on the way to an 85-7 victor in 6-man football.

The Eagles end the season this Friday at home, hosting the 1-A East 6-man Conference champion Midwest Oilers. Meeteetse hosts a final regular season home game against Farson-Eden.

In the space of just 56 seconds Meeteetse scored four times. The onslaught began with an 18-yard run by Carter Johnson and another run of 16 yards by Shawn Shepperson. Logan Maurer ripped the ball from Silas SunRhodes and ran two yards into the end zone for the third score. Seth Bennett capped the one-minute burst with a 31-yard interception return and the stunned Eagles trailed 27-0.

Another interception by Wilson Renner, a Bennett Run and passes from Bennet to Johnson and Alex Poole rounded out the incredible 55-point performance.

Game officials approached both benches at the end of the first quarter and presented options for a running clock or shorter time periods. The 45-point mercy rule that ends the final two quarters of a game with the clock running on all occasions except timeouts and after scores could be put into effect with the consent of both head coaches.

St. Stephen's and Meeteetse both agreed, and the final three periods rolled by quickly.

Trailing 73-0 near the end of the third period, the Eagles discovered a little offense in passes from Derrick Roman to Taylor Behan and Jaron Arthur. An Arthur reception moved the ball to the 2-yard line as the period ended, and he scored on a pass from Roman on the first play of the final quarter to put St. Stephen's on the board.
