Thompson all-West for Riverton at XC regional

Oct 22, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Olivia Thompson brought home Class 4-A West conference cross country honors on Friday after crossing the finish line seventh for the Riverton Wolverines in Green River.

Thompson completed the 3.1 mile course in a time of 21:05.12 to pave the way for the Wolverines.

The top 10 runners from the postseason meet earn all-conference recognition.

Thompson is a junior for the Wolverines.

Two years ago, Thompson won the Class 4-A state individual title. She attends Shoshoni High School but runs for Riverton because SHS has no cross country program.

"Olivia had an outstanding race for us," RHS coach Jay Dayton said. "She really came on strong at the end."

Thompson cracked the top 10 after she put it into high gear at the end of the race. After Thompson for the Wolverines, Bailey Broadbent finished 25th in 23:07.85. Jillian C'Bearing was 29th (23:59.40).

The Wolverine girls were fifth in the team race, scoring 122 points.

Casper Natrona took the team title with 39 points. Rock Springs finished second at 54 points.

Riverton's Gavin Settlemire was 32nd (19:06.79) for the highest finish for the boys.

"The boys were kind of shocked with the competition in the varsity race," Dayton said. "We had a lot of freshmen and sophomores in the race."

The Wolverines were sixth in the team standings (179 points).

Rock Springs was the run away winner with 27 points. Evanston finished second (55 points).

Ricky Faure from Rock Springs sprinted away from the pack to win the individual boys title in 16:05.57.

Hunter Davila from Kelly Walsh placed second (16:21.44).

"The competition right now is incredible in 4-A," Dayton said.
