Oct 27, 2013 - StaffBefore the introduction of the Wyoming State Marching Band Festival, the unofficial "state tournament" for high school marching bands in the state was University of Wyoming Band Day.
Thirty-six years ago this week, two Fremont County bands brought home state championships in their respective divisions. Riverton, under the direction of John Aanestad, won the Class AA division (the equivalent of the current Class 4-A), and the Shoshoni High School band won the Class B division.
Competition was held in the morning at War Memorial Stadium. Later, all participating bands formed on the field to play the national anthem, after which the state champions were announced. As the AA winner, the RHS band then performed in front of a near-capacity crowd at halftime of the Wyoming-BYU game on a sunny, warm and calm afternoon.
As for the football, BYU beat Wyoming 10-6.
