Midwest downs EaglesOct 28, 2013 By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer
Top seeded Midwest rolled over the winless St. Stephen's Eagles 63-20 Friday afternoon in the final game of the season for St. Stephen's. The Eagles finish their first year of varsity competition in the Class 1-A 6-man West at 0-8.
Midwest goes on to host Farson-Eden in opening round playoff action next weekend.
The game started slowly for both teams, with turnovers slowing both offenses. The Oilers moved up the field on their first possession, but Laquan Shakespeare intercepted a pass at the 10 to end the drive.
The Oilers uncoiled after that and tallied 25 points in the final six minutes of the first quarter on a Tucker Evans touchdown run of 31-yards, a safety when the Eagles snapped the ball out of the end zone, and a pair of Cory Guseman runs.
The second period featured 30 points by the Oilers, with Josh Lindsay tallying a pair of touchdowns on a fumble recovery and a scoop-and-score fumble run.
Ely Ruebelmann tallied the final scoring run of the half, and Cameron Ray hit three of four extra-point kicks to lift the visitors to a 55-0 halftime lead.
With the running clock in place via the mercy rule, the second half went by at quick pace.
St. Stephen's running back Brandon C'Hair tallied three second-half touchdowns, with the first coming on a 21-yard run and the final pair on passes from Derrick Roman. The passes were from 38 and 5 yards.
The Eagles return to a smaller 6-man league next year, with the departure of Wyoming Indian and Saratoga back to 11-man football.
