Wind River, opens 2-A state volleyball Thursday

Oct 30, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

The Wind River Cougars are back in the Class 2-A state volleyball tournament after a three-year absence.

Wind River's last appearance in state came in the 2009 season.

The Lady Cougars have the No. 4 seed from the West this year in the double-elimination state tournament.

Wind River opens the tournament at 2 p.m. Thursday against Big Horn.

Defending champion Big Horn is the top seed from the East. Big Horn lost to Lovell in the 2012 Class 2-A championship match.

All matches will be played at the Casper Events Center.

"It's very exciting for our team to go to state," Wind River coach Kristan Trujillo said. "We have worked hard this season to qualify. Our girls haven't played at state throughout their high school career."

Trujillo said the fan support was great last weekend at the Class 2-A West regionals at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.

"We were all so happy," Trujillo said. "The girls were really excited, as well as their families."

The four seniors on the Wind River roster this year are co-captains Macayla Arrington and Tory Thoman, along with sisters Megan and Danielle Giles.

"Our middle blockers contributed to our state qualification," Trujillo said.

At the Class 2-A West regional tournament in Lander, Wind River qualified for the state tournament in a consolation win over Greybull 24-26, 25-18, 25-20, 25-15.

Shoshoni in 2-A field

The winner of Big Horn-Wind River plays in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of Southeast (No. 3 seed/East) and Lovell (No. 2 seed/West).

The consolation match is played at 1 p.m. Saturday.

"This year appears to be fairly balanced," Shoshoni coach Christina Mills said.

Shoshoni starts its state tournament at 5 p.m. Thursday vs. Wright (No. 2 seed/East).

At 6:30 p.m. Tongue River (No. 4 seed/East) faces Kemmerer (No. 1 seed/West).

"Kemmerer and Lovell from this side (West) have height and strong hitters," Mills said. "The same goes for Big Horn and Wright. However, all four teams are beatable, especially at the state tournament."

Southeast (No. 3 seed/East) plays at 3:30 p.m. vs. Lovell (No. 2 seed/West) in the other opening round match.

The third-place match will go off at 2 p.m. Saturday,

with the championship match at 4 p.m.
