Schools should not be lock boxes

Oct 31, 2013 - Lance Finley, Riverton

Editor:

I was talking with my daughter recently and she informed me that Riverton Middle School had a mock lockdown. She then informed me that she was reprimanded for not taking the lockdown seriously.

Is it possible someone will threaten the school and cause a lockdown? "Well anything's possible, isn't it?"

Should our kids be subject to a fear-mongering police state? I personally don't believe so.

Is a cop on campus all day a necessity, or just ridiculous? Very ridiculous if you consider it takes an average of 4 minutes to get from one end of town to another. It's a tax waste and psychology damaging to young minds that are there to learn. I honestly thought the gestapo died with the Nazi party.

A quick word to parents. Teach your kids respect and decency, so others don't need to. In other words, be a parent.

Schools should be schools, not lock boxes. Lazy parenting got us here.

I personally don't like the idea of my kids being locked away where I can't get to them in a crisis, and I know for a fact I'm not alone on that.

I wonder how they plan to keep gun-toting parents in a small community out if something happens? Sounds more like a powder keg than safety to me.
