Feb 6, 2012 - By Randy Tucker Sports WriterShoshoni came oh so close to a weekend sweep over Kemmerer and Big Piney at home this weekend. The Wranglers fell hard in overtime to the Kemmerer Rangers 69-67 Saturday.
Shoshoni picked up its first Southwest 2-A conference win of the season at home Friday night with a 55-46 win over Big Piney. The win avenges a two-point loss to the Punchers last month in Sublette County.
Shoshoni dug a huge hole to open Saturday's contest against Kemmerer. The Wranglers trailed 18-4 after one quarter, and it looked like the blowout was on.
But Grayson Medicine Cloud hit the first of his five 3-pointers and rallied the Wrangler offense. Shoshoni clawed back to a 20-14 deficit on shots from Jordan Whitener, Josh Thoren and a trey from Whitener that prompted a Kemmerer timeout at 4:57.
Back to back treys from well beyond the 3-point arc by Jordan and a follow by Nathaniel Lutz knotted the game at 22.R00;Jayden Haslam, Lutz and Whitener combined to lift the Wranglers to an improbable 30-24 lead with just seconds left in the half, but a 30-foot buzzer-beater from Kemmerer closed the gap to three at the intermission. The period ended with Shoshoni rolling on a 16-2 run before Kemmerer's desperation shot rained in.
The score was knotted at 34 and 40 before Kemmerer made a late run to take a 49-44 lead into the final period.
Lutz opened the fourth quarter with his first 3-pointer of the season and Medicine Cloud quickly followed with one of his own to regain the Shoshoni lead 50-49.
Tempers flared with game officials tossing a vocal Kemmerer fan from the gym with Shoshoni holding a 53-50 lead.R00;Every call seemed to go Kemmerer's way after the inciden,t but Shoshoni clawed back to retake the lead at 56-55 on a Thoren to Nick Wright wrap-around pass.R00; Medicine Cloud hit another trey to tie the game at 59, and the Wranglers held a 62-59 lead with when Kemmerer's Ty Deeter tied the game at 62 with 37 seconds remaining.
Medicine Cloud dished a perfect lob to Wright, but he was hammered to the floor before he shot and missed the front end of the free throw with four seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
Two minutes rolled off the clock before Kemmerer took a two-point lead, but Wright's post move knotted the game at 64.R00;Kemmerer hit a shot with 17 seconds left, and Shoshoni head coach Max Mills called timeout.
On the ensuing inbound play, officials whistled Shoshoni for a five-second call with Mills and Medicine Cloud both emphatically trying to call time out again. The refs missed the time out signals but didn't miss Mills throwing his clipboard and gave him a technical foul, effectively putting the game out of reach with a four-point lead on the ensuing free throws.
Medicine Cloud hit a last-second trey to cut the margin to one but the Wranglers were forced to foul. Kemmerer hit one of two with just three-tenths of a second on the clock to seal the win.
Shoshoni 55, Big Piney 46
In the first meeting between the two schools, Big Piney set the pace of the game with a very deliberate offense that took Shoshoni out of its accustomed pace.
This time Coach Mills put the Wranglers in a full-court man defense, and the Punchers never had the chance to slow the pace.
Shoshoni built an early lead on 3-pointers from Jordan Whitener and Josh Thoren along with quick drives from Whitener and Grayson Medicine Cloud.
Big Piney closed a bit in the second but Shoshoni's defense held the Punchers' leading scorer, Nolan Jones, to just five free throws on the period. Jones tallied 10 points and hit only two field goals on the contest.
Shoshoni sophomores Jayden Haslam, Nathaniel Lutz and Lawry Johnson continued to improve and accounted for 16 combined points in the win.
Shoshoni entertains Dubois and Thermopolis next weekend.
