Sheridan College swept the Central Wyoming College Rustlers in the opening round of the Region IX volleyball tournament Wednesday afternoon in Torrington.

Sheridan took a 25-14, 32-30, 25-14, victory to begin the double-elimination tournament.

Sheridan was the No. 5 seed for the tournament. CWC had the No. 4 seed.

"Sheridan blocked extremely well," CWC head coach Tiffany Stauffenberg said.

Before the postseason started, the Rustlers won five of their last six matches.

CWC now will watch all the matches on Thursday before playing in a must-win match Friday at noon.

CWC plays the loser of the match between Northwest College and Casper College.

"We need to block," Stauffenberg said. "I can't express it enough. We had three blocks in the entire match with Sheridan. You won't win any matches with those stats."

The tournament wraps up with the championship match Saturday afternoon.

Sheridan College 3, CWC 0

The second set was the turning point of the match for Sheridan against CWC.

In the marathon set, Sheridan escaped by two points.

"Losing that second set took everything out of us," Stauffenberg said. "We led throughout the second by two and three points. We couldn't keep the lead. We always let them catch back up."

In the third set, Sheridan jumped on CWC 7-0 for the early advantage.

"We couldn't recover," Stauffenberg said.

For Sheridan College, Tyler Chrisman put in 10 kills, one solo block, four assisted blocks and six digs.
