Hudson man bound over to district court

Nov 12, 2013 - From staff reports

The case against Steven Ervin, 55, of Hudson, has been bound over to district court in Carbon County.

His arraignment had not been scheduled as of Tuesday morning.

Ervin was arrested without incident Oct. 25 for allegedly making online threats against law enforcement and government officials.

In one of the statements, which appeared Oct. 24 on Facebook, Steven Ervin, 55, said he was writing from the Riverton Branch Library.

A K-9 unit was called to search for explosives at the Fremont County Courthouse

in Lander in response to the threats. Nothing of note was found in the courthouse, but officials said the Riverton and Lander branches of the Wyoming Department of Corrections closed early that Friday as a precautionary measure.

Officials said Ervin specifically had mentioned the Carbon County Sheriff's Office and Rawlins Police Department in his alleged threats. Ervin is currently on probation for simple battery, and in 2007, he was sentenced to 18 to 54 months in jail for robbery in Carbon County.

Sgt. Derrek Craig of the Carbon County Sheriff's Office said Ervin seems to have held a grudge against the officials involved in the 2007 case.

"It appears that Mr. Ervin has a vendetta against these people and all court officials and law enforcement in general," Craig wrote in an affidavit filed last week.

On Oct. 24, Ervin reportedly posted several statements on Facebook that were threatening toward law enforcement, court officials and Wyoming Department of Corrections employees. His messages included phrases like, "I'm (going to) kill all you," and, " ... my network of associates within 48 hours will do something so drastic ... "

He continued, "I'm at the Riverton library as I type these words. When I leave here in five minutes my associates and I are about to unlease (sic) the crime of the century..." Later, he indicated he already had committed a crime "guaranteed to get me nation wide coverage."

Ervin addressed Carbon County law enforcement in another part of the post, writing, "Nothing is going to protect you from the smackdown ... " He referenced the "poor citizens of Rawlins" and said he would make an "example" out of officers in that area.

"In 48 hours I can guarantee anybody and everybody on my friend list is gonna (sic) be investigated by the FBI and all those three letter entities to try to put together what made me snap," he wrote.

Craig said Ervin's posts were viewed and were available for download in Carbon County.

"(They) were immediately of concern to all of Carbon County law enforcement, prosecution, court officials, judges and Department of Corrections employees," Craig wrote.

As a result of the threats, Wyoming Probation and Parole asked the Fremont County Sheriff's Office to arrest and hold Ervin.

The threatening incident is being investigated by the Wyoming Probation and Parole office and the Carbon County Sheriff's Office.
